The Red Rose Cafe

Stamps for Soldiers

CarePacks for soldiers is a wonderful program that was started by, Stephen Doyle and a group of South Weymouth neighbors in 2004.  This group of volunteers send out carepacks to the US troops serving overseas in Iraq and Afghanistan.   Each CarePack care package contains food products, personal care items, books, magazines and at least one letter or card from a child.  Over the years this program has grown and they have sent over 15,400 boxes to our US troops.  As donations have increased, so has the cost of shipping.  For the past three years, the group has gotten some help from Ellie McKenzie, owner of the Red Rose Cafe.  Each year, she sells cards that look like oversized postage stamps and on these stamps are pictures of local troops.  She sells these stamps for $1 apiece to local patrons who can write their names on the cards and put them up on the cafe's walls.  In 2012, the Red Rose Cafe raised $7,200 that went toward CarePacks' shipping costs. The Red Rose Cafe enjoys selling these stamps and "It's really taken off" and "How can you say no to a soldier?" says McKenzie. This is such a wonderful program and we are so glad to be able to help our service men and women overseas.  For more information on this great organization please visit their website at:
